Callaghan Hall Afternoon Tea: July 31, 2008

More than 30 people gathered for a tea reception to honor a unique chapter in I-House's history: its service to the Navy V-12 as Callaghan Hall. The event featured remarks from Dr. Karl Pister, former Callaghan Hall alumnus and Dean and Professor of Engineering Emeritus at UC Berkeley, and an introduction by Martin Brennan, I-House Executive Director. Colorful stories shared by alumni provided a glimpse of life in Callaghan Hall.

A soon to be finalized plaque honoring Callaghan Hall alumni was unveiled. It will be modified to include the names of contributors supporting the mission and historic home of I-House/Callaghan Hall. Supporters wishing to have their names included can make a gift here and/or alert I-House prior to August 31, 2008.

The plaque, which will be placed in the Dining Commons, reads:

Commemorating Callaghan Hall

From 1943-1945 International House served as Callaghan Hall housing nearly 1,000 members of the elite United States V-12 Navy College Training Program. This nation wide innovative program increased the Navy’s contingent of college-educated men, desegregated the Navy, and generated military leaders to the nation for the pivotal 40 years after WWII, including 38 admirals.

International House honors the sacrifices of these men to forge a world in which the spirit of brotherhood and the principles of I-House might be renewed. Dedicated July 31st, 2008, in recognition of the 65th Anniversary of Callaghan Hall's founding.
